A total of 3.1% of people aged 16 years or over showed signs of dependence on drugs, including 2.3% who showed signs of dependence on cannabis only, and 0.8% had signs of dependence on other drugs. Drug addiction does not stop at the individual but spreads its impact across the whole country. The cost of illegal drugs to society is estimated at around £20 billion a year, a figure that includes the strain on healthcare, policing and wider community services. However, the greatest risk with these substances is the untested nature of them. It is impossible to produce one of these substances and know with certainty how it will affect users, especially in relation to ‘safe’ doses of the substance.
